The Tesla Model S may not be the best known car in the world, but it's an electric sports car that shouldn't be overlooked. The Model S is currently selling well in the US and will arrive on UK shores in 2014 fixed with right hand drive. So, will it be any good?

Review

The Tesla Model S is an electric sports car. That means you're not burning precious, expensive petrol every time you take it for a spin as power comes from a choice of three battery packs: 40, 60 or 85kWh, with ranges of 160 miles, 230 miles and 300 miles respectively. However, the 40kWh
Model S will not be for sale in the UK.

But, let's not forget that the Model S is still a sports car despite its electric power. The handling is sharp and controlled, while the braking ability is also excellent. The figures are also no short of impressive: 0-60mph in
4.4 seconds and a limited top speed of 130mph, which is excellent for an electric car. Plus, the aggressive
acceleration seems effortless as the Tesla does it in near silence, making the performance all the more impressive. Also, Tesla claims that the absence of an actual engine allows for more effective crumple zones in the electric sports car, which is a plus on the safety front.

Tesla Model S Design

The aim for Tesla was to encourage motorists to embrace the electric sports car. The design exudes style, sportiness and sleek. All the curves are perfectly sculpted to give a fluid visual, while the angular headlamps give a striking front image. The front grille is even purely a design element, with no mechanical purpose; it's simply there to dampen the car's electric image. The result is that the Model S adds Tesla to a rare breed of truly desirable electric cars.

What's more, the interior is no let down. The huge 17" LCD display is a fantastic addition which boasts a host of interactive features. The only significant complaint about the Tesla Model S is the very poor rear-view visibility - the rear window is tiny. While from a design perspective it looks great, practically it's a blunder. The only other qualm is the material quality, which is by no means poor, but more might have been expected from such an exquisite looking car.

Tesla Model S Price

The Model S starts at £49 900, which for an electric sports car that's bigger than a Porsche Panamera, seems a bargain. The top range model starts at £68,700.

While the Tesla Model S does have its flaws, it is nonetheless a beautiful sports car that is a significant entry into the electric market. And we can't wait for Tesla to make a coupe to take on the Jaguar F-Type, if they do. All in all, brilliant.
