2013 Volkswagen Golf Mk7
2013 Volkswagen Golf Mk7
The 2013 Volkswagen Golf Mk7 was bound to cause a stir, like any new Golf when it's unveiled. But can the Golf Mk7 live up to the hype, or does it fall short of expectation?

Golf Mk7: Premium Hatchback

Quality is a big selling point for the 2013 Golf. The new design has the sharper and more aggressive look that the old car lacked,
giving it more character and appeal. The
smarter Golf Mk7 also has LED lights incorporated in the stylish headlamps, adding to the premium feel. A 28mm decrease in height gives a sportier appearance, complementing the more aggressive look. The only qualm we have is that it looks a little too much like a Polo. Maybe a little more adventure in the design department would be welcome for the next generation Golf?

The interior has also experienced a premium redesign. Touchscreen comes as standard and materials will be of top quality, with the whole centre console twisted towards the driver to ease access.  Plus, there's increased leg and shoulder room due to the 2013 Golf growing 56mm in length and 13mm in width. There'll also be a raft of new safety features, including fatigue detection and autobraking that increase the Golf Mk7's all-round appeal.

Engines

The 2013 Volkswagen Golf Mk7 gets four engines from launch; two turbocharged petrols and two diesels, with the range expected to grow.

1.2 TFSI (85bhp, 57.7mpg, 113g/km CO2)
1.4 TFSI (138bhp, 58.9mpg, 112g/km CO2)
1.6 TDI (103bhp, 74.3mpg, 99g/km CO2)
2.0 TDI (148bhp, 68.9mpg, 106g/km CO2)

As usual, the figures are very impressive, but they'll only get better, with a BlueMotion 1.6 TDI to be available that'll claim 88.3mpg and just 85g/km of CO2. That's better than a Polo BlueMotion! The 2013 Golf should also be very good to drive.

Rivals

The new premium hatchback goes up against its usual Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra rivals, as well as the new Seat Leon. But the German hatchback has a premium edge over all of them. Fact.

Golf Mk7 Price & Release

The 2013 Volkswagen Golf Mk7 will cost from £17,000; the same as the outgoing hatchback. Plus, the wait isn't long if you want one; the hatchback goes on sale in November. Expect a sales rush because Volkswagen has a winner. Again.
