The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé made its first appearance in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show this year, and since then it has become one of the most anticipated cars of the decade. The idea of this variant of the 6 Series came from the incredible
BMW CS Concept, which unfortunately was scrapped due to the recession. But, now buyers only have a matter of weeks to wait before the first deliveries of the 4-door stunner get sent out next month, in July. The Gran coupé's release marks BMW's entry into a whole new sector of the car market: the highly competitive 4-door coupé sector. Currently dominating the field are the Mercedes CLS, Porsche Panamera and the
Audi A7. However, that could be set to change. Out of the four cars, the BMW is certainly the best looker, with its outstretched bonnet and carefully styled proportions and details. The Merc and Audi follow closely, but the rear of the Panamera certainly lets it down; though the front end is stylish, the hatch shape of the Porsche needs much attention for the next generation design. So the BMW wins on style, and that's a big factor in the 4-door coupé market. However, the BMW is the most expensive, with the base model, which features a 316bhp twin-turbocharged petrol engine, costing a hefty £61, 390; that's similar to the Panamera, but a massive £20,000 more than the entry level
A7. You could get the Audi and a new BMW 1 Series for that money! However, in terms of the styling and exquisite interior and the engaging driving experience BMW is renowned for, the 6 Series Gran Coupé is worth its premium price. Furthermore, some versions of the 6 Series will be very economical too, with the 640d set to achieve 50.4mpg and deliver 138g/km of CO2, whilst still achieving a quick 5.4 second 0-60mph sprint time. If the Gran Coupé is as successful as predicted, we could see an estate version produced to add increased practicality and compete with the upcoming CLS Shooting Brake. Plus, BMW is planning on releasing a 4 Series sports saloon, which would go head to head with the Audi A5 Sportback.
